Mumbai On High Alert As 380 mm Rain Batters City In 48 Hours; Schools, Colleges Closed
Mumbai continues to reel under relentless monsoon showers as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for the city and its suburbs after nearly 380 mm of rainfall was recorded over the past 48 hours. With heavy rain expected to continue, authorities have announced the closure of all schools and colleges on Tuesday as a precautionary measure.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said the decision was taken keeping the safety of students and staff in mind. The city has witnessed widespread waterlogging, traffic congestion, and disruptions to public transport following continuous downpours over the last two days.
According to the IMD, Mumbai is likely to receive more heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds, prompting authorities to urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain indoors whenever possible. Emergency teams have been deployed across vulnerable areas to monitor the situation and respond to any rain-related incidents.
Several low-lying areas have reported severe waterlogging, affecting road traffic and slowing down suburban train services in parts of the city. Commuters have been advised to check travel updates before stepping out, while civic officials continue to monitor rainfall and tidal conditions closely.
The IMD's Orange Alert indicates the possibility of significant rainfall that could disrupt normal life, with residents urged to remain alert and follow official advisories. Authorities are expected to review the weather situation continuously before deciding on any further closures or precautionary measures
